The focus of U7 is to help the children learn more about soccer and prepare them for the older recreation programs with SPYA.  It is important to note that U7 is non-competitive with no score keeping/tracking.  A key element to be aware of with U7 is the game is a faster/stronger game than what is experienced in Kindersoccer as the kids become stronger and increase their coordination skills.

Teams will have a weekday practice, typically at 5:15 PM, day selected by the coach, with games on Saturdays at 8:30 AM, again at Grange Park.  Practices will typically consist of drills and scrimmaging.  Some drills will be fun/game based others will be coordination and skill.  If there are certain days during the week you are not available, please note that when registering your child. There will be times when the coach will ask for parental participation with different drills – which is always fun.  Come prepared to play if you are willing to help!

Games will be 4 ten-minute quarters with a 5 min half time.  Children will play 2 quarters of a game and will be rotated through various positions.  To attempt to maintain an educational experience, if the score during a game is approximately 3 or more goals ahead coaches will look at alternative strategies to help even the skill level – but it will not guarantee a “win”.  It is helpful if parents talk about how the game is played instead of how many goals are scored.  We ask parents to cheer on all children on field not just your own child.  Please take note that our first couple Saturdays will be a practice at 8:30 AM and thereafter we will have games – Saturdays at 8:30 AM.  Each coach will share the game schedule.

Key aspects to note for practices and games:

  • Children are required to wear cleats and shin guards - this is non-negotiable, if they are forgotten they will not play.
  • Parents should plan to stay at the field for the entire practice.  Due to safety, parents are not permitted to leave children alone at the field without an adult (not including the coach).  If you make arrangements with another parent, you need to ensure that individual has your contact information and will remain with your child at the field until you arrive, without a coach being present.
  • Bring a water bottle.
  • Dress your child in seasonable appropriate clothing.
  • A practice shirt and a game shirt will be issued to your child.  Practice shirts can be kept, game shirts are to be turned in.
  • Starting subs (for games) will be based on weekday practice attendance.
  • Team Pictures will be announced early in the season, most likely on the first scheduled game.
